New Carbs for an Old Bike.
I had been fighting with a set of 44 year old Mikuni 29mm smoothbore carbs and could never get them to run right. I bought the bike brand new (1977 Suzuki GS750) and to be honest it never ran right with those carbs from day one. I searched the inter web for *New* replacement carbs and found Murray. Seemed like kind of a Rube Goldberg setup, but I decided to roll the dice. Ordered on a Tuesday, they were here on Friday. Nice!
Simple to swap them out, and fired right up. It ran, but still wasn’t right. I replaced the electronic ignition and did a valve adjustment. That made a huge difference, but I was still bogging and missing on top the end. Called Murray and we went over a few things. He suggested raising the needle up one notch. Did that, and problem solved! Bike runs better than it ever has. Ever! Idle is smooth, mid range is nice, and once you hit 6500, you better be hanging on and pointed straight, because you’re gonna be leaving in a hurry!
I got the welded manifolds, but Murray is working on a cast set for the bike. $60 to swap them out down the road, so I’ll be on that band wagon when the time comes.
Couple of things that could have been better. Small things, but worth mentioning.
The intake manifold outlet measures 38mm, the old carbs had 34mm outlets. You really have to force the manifolds into the carb holders. It would be nice if the ends of the manifolds were turned down to 34mm. That would also give you a visual “step” to insure you have them in all the way. I suspect the carb holders will eventually fail as they are really jammed in there.
From idle to maybe 5% throttle the bike jerks, it’s hard to feather off of idle, especially when shifting. I suspect I need some more fine tuning, but am confident Murray will be able to walk me through it. Too cold to work on the bike now, so that’s a springtime problem.
The throttle cable elbow didn’t fit the throttle grip housing, so I had to cut my old cables, and retrofit it to Murray’s cable set up. Probably not Murray’s fault, I think 1977 was a unique one year only for the housing.
I got foam filter elements instead of K&N pleated filters shown on his site. Probably a good thing, I’m not sure I have room left for real filter pods, and I can “squish” the foam ones into place.
If you are hesitating on trying this carbs, I’d suggest you pull the trigger. Used carbs are going for $400 or more on eBay, and you will still have to go through them and there’s no support. Just get these, and be done with it. Sure am glad I did!

I am absolutely astonished! I finally was able to get around on installing these on my 1977 gs750. Installed these with a fuel filter like the instructions said. The bike started faster that I have ever had it. Literally night and day difference from the stock carbs! I spent months and months trying to get the stock carbs to perform and could never get the bike to run correctly! I am 1000% pleased and I’m still in shock with the plug n play performance out of the box! Thank you so much!!!
