Hi, I had purchased a set of carbs for my 40 year old Honda CB 650 from Murray’s carbs. In short, they are everything I’d hoped they would be and more.
I bought this bike from my friends mom after he passed away. It was is fathers before him, so there is a lot of family value in this heirloom bike. I had to make it all that it could be, if not entirely stock, the best it can be.
From the beginning, the bike had carburetor issues, as it had sat for 15 years with gas in it. My friends dad had fallen sick and just never got back to the bike. My friend had plans to get the bike back on the road, but as a business professional, he had very little time to devote to the bike. As what usually happens in life, my friend got a pulmonary embolism and passed away after a very short while before he could get to fixing the bike.
So the bike was passed to me. I took the bike to a local company that said they would clean the carbs and get it running. The local company said they cleaned the carbs as well as they could. They did get the bike running, but it was leaking oil and burning some blue too. That is pretty much expected on any older bike. After I got the bike home, i took it out with my grandson for a little bit. The shop insisted that I buy new tires, which I did, but during that ride it turned out that when the shop put the new tire on, they pinched the tube and it went flat. In addition, one of the jets “fell” off inside the carburetor. Sadly the day I went to pick up the bike my friends mom had passed away as well.
I do have some experience with motorcycles and Honda especially. My first bike was a 1978 Honda CB750k. That was back in 1986, a friend and I went across western Canada on what was my first road trip in late September… Yes…it was cold.
When I put the order in for the replacement carb kit on Murray’s carbs website, I really didn’t have a lot of optimism. It is difficult to find people that you can trust to work on your bike, it is MUCH harder to find people you would trust on the internet. When I came across Murray’s carbs, it was one of those things that seemed too good to be true. In this case, it was the real deal. I bought the 650 carb kit and crossed my fingers.
When I went to install the new carb kit, I found i needed to take out the factory air box and move the battery sideways to allow the new air filters to fit. As I tried to install the Y tube, I found that it was too small to fit on the manifold. I called Murray and explained what I was looking at. I sent him a couple of pictures so he could see and then he asked for some details on the VIN. In 1980 there were 3 versions of manifold that could have been used. I had no idea, but Murray knew right away what we needed to do. He shipped me out some new Y tubes even before I shipped back the set that came with the carbs. He also sent out some new rubber mounts, so I didn’t have to fight with the stock carb mount that most Honda owners experience eventually.
Once i got the new tubes, Murray called ma and made sure I didn’t make any adjustments to the carbs, and explained what I needed to do. I followed his instructions carefully and was able to install the carbs without any issue. After that came the moment of truth…. I put the choke on both carbs turned on the gas…. and boom..it started right up…. It was idling really fast, but that’s normal with the choke on, but it was running and running very smooth. once it warmed up I was able to shut off the choke and the 40 year old bike that sat for 15 years ran like it just came off the assembly line.
Because the bike needed to get the head gasket fixed and probably the valve guide seals.. maybe the cylinders honed and maybe some new pistons… Murray suggested that after this work was done, I should call him and we would go through some final tuning on the carbs. We’ll see how that goes soon I hope.
Now, I am an older person these days, and I have had a lot of experience good and bad with dealerships, mechanics, back yard guys and journeymen. None, None of them have ever stood behind their product like Murray’s carbs does. Most times, some mechanics, they take your cash and hope you don’t call them back. Not in this case. Like most of us today I have bought a lot of stuff online. Sometimes what you receive isn’t what you hoped to buy, sometimes the parts are broken and you send them back. For the very first time I felt that I was going to be looked after even if it cost a little extra to do.
So far, I have suggested Murray’s carbs to a few people with older bikes. I will continue to suggest Murray’s carbs because they work. Murray stands behind his work and it’s afraid to tell you what you might be doing wrong and not to adjust his setup. He knows what he’s doing in the way Grandpa used to know what he was doing. Nothing is chance, nothing is fudged… it’s right or it’s not Murray’s carbs.
The images are 1) when I first got the bike 2) first trying to start it… 3) the y tubes not fitting 4) completed before i took it to get the head gasket replaced and 5) on the street still waiting for the head gasket. I have the side covers, but I am trying not to lose them… so they aren’t on the bike will I am working on it.

I rebuild my 650 this winter stripping it to the frame, if you know CB’s you know that they are notorious for not liking cold starts. Before the rebuild I would drain my battery just trying to start it some times. I originally was going to bring the carb in for a professional tune and Cleaning but with the shops hourly rate it would have cost more then this carb. So I pulled the trigger and bought it . Thought I was buying a new carb..nope, I bought a whole new bike! I plugged it in, adjusted the cables and hit the start button for the first time since the rebuild and she fired up first try. It was 0c at the time. Unbelievable. Since then I have been enjoying more power & tourqe then ever before. Havent had to use the choke once. Murray called me personally for a chat before he sent it out. He takes pride in his work clearly. And thats everything too me. 6/5 stars all-day. Thanks Murray!

Really easy to install and all the components are very well made. Much less hassle compared to the OEM carbs. My 79 CB650 sprung right to life for the first time in years. Money well spent.
